Unlock the Secrets: How TEMU Drives Massive Sales (and How You Can Too!)

Reading time: 3 minutes.

As the Christmas and Black Friday season approaches, I took a deep dive into what TEMU does to make customers buy immediately. This email is a must-read for anyone with an eCommerce store or planning to launch one (feel free to share with friends/colleagues who might find it useful).

Simply having a well-functioning eCommerce store isn’t enough to drive substantial sales. Success hinges on attracting more eyes to your store—enter social media marketing, paid ads, etc. But once you have visitors, you can’t expect them to purchase just because your products are available. With attention spans shorter than a goldfish's, you must engage customers immediately.

Consider this: your eCommerce should resemble a bustling supermarket more than a quiet, minimalistic health food store. Supermarkets use displays, discounts, and bundles to encourage impulse buys. The same principle applies online—make your store exciting and dynamic to maximize sales.

TEMU's Strategies to Boost eCommerce Sales (and How You Can Adapt Them)

Flash Sales and Limited-Time Offers: Short-lived deals create urgency. TEMU promotes ultra-short-term deals, lasting as little as 10-15 minutes or up to 48 hours.

Copy Them: Add countdown timers to your newsletters and product pages to create a sense of urgency.

Free Shipping: Often offered with a minimum purchase to encourage larger orders.

Copy Them: Analyze your average order value and slightly increase it to entice customers to order more. Promote this on your homepage and checkout page. Offer lower-cost items (with good margins) at checkout to push customers over the free shipping threshold.

Example: If your average order size is 90 euros and you sell coats or other high-ticket items, don't just offer free shipping for orders over 100 euros. Instead, introduce lower-cost, complementary products like gloves, scarves, or fabric shavers to your lineup. Encourage customers to add these items to their cart before checkout by making them appear as part of a deal.

Gamified Discounts: Reward systems and spin-the-wheel games provide instant discounts.

Copy Them: Combine this with a limited-time offer to make customers feel lucky. Offer a spin-the-wheel discount valid for only 15 minutes to encourage quick decisions.

Personalized Recommendations: TEMU uses smart AI to suggest products based on browsing behavior.

Copy Them: Create product recommendations for different customer profiles. For example, if you sell health & fitness products, tailor recommendations to different goals/experience levels, such as weight loss or muscle growth; newbies vs professionals.

Social Proof: TEMU shows how many others have purchased the same item and includes product reviews.

Copy Them: Product reviews are easy to add, but they need regular monitoring. It can make your store look inactive if most products only have a couple of reviews. For tips on gathering customer reviews, please read this article. While showing purchase counts may not suit every store, a simple way to highlight popular items is by adding "Bestseller" or "Customer Favorite" badges to select products.

FOMO Tactics: Alerts like “Only 3 left!” create a fear of missing out.

Copy Them: Add limited stock availability badges to your eCommerce store.

Safe Purchase Proof: Clear shipping information and safe payment options build trust.

Copy Them: One of the main reasons customers abandon a new store without making a purchase is a lack of trust. Overcome this by ensuring all store pages are fully completed, error-free, and prominently feature trusted payment providers and couriers. Clearly communicate this information not only at the bottom of your site but also on your homepage and product pages.

Attractive Visuals: Eye-catching banners, photos showing products in use, and clear CTAs make a difference.

Copy Them: Sell benefits, not just products. Use videos and clear CTAs on all promotional banners and website slides.

Don’t just sell the super glue, sell the benefits it provides.

If your eCommerce store isn’t bringing the results you expect, an outside consultation or audit might help identify and fix unseen issues. Consider reaching out to me if you'd like to discuss how I can help.

One more thing to note for anyone working with web developers on creating a new e-commerce store: I’m currently working with a client who is updating their store. While the client knows exactly what product-related features they want and the developers are skilled in building a beautiful, functional site, no one was initially focused on marketing and sales growth. My client wisely involved me from the start, as many of the strategies I’ve mentioned are often overlooked by developers. These strategies may require additional work and investment, but it’s essential to consider them early on to optimize the customer journey and maximize sales.

Good luck!
